Some businesses start with a big strategy.
Others start with a moment every parent recognises.
For Tracey Taylor, it started in a playgroup… with one ride-on car and a room full of toddlers desperately fighting over it.
Tracey’s boys were obsessed with anything on wheels. Bikes, scooters, cars – if it moved, they wanted it. And like many parents, she noticed the same thing every time they went to a playgroup: one tiny ride-on toy, lots of frustration, and a room full of disappointed children.
That’s when she thought:
“What if there was a whole room full of ride-ons?”
That simple idea became Ride On Time.
Building a Business from Real Life
Tracey didn’t come from a business background.
She worked in customer services at TripAdvisor. Her husband worked in banking. No children’s activity qualifications. No roadmap. No template.
What she did have was:
- A real-life problem
- An idea that made sense
- The courage to give it a go
They started small, running community sessions in village halls. The response was instant. Parents loved it. Children loved it. The business took off faster than they expected.
Then the enquiries started coming in from all over the country.
Party requests they couldn’t physically deliver.
That’s when Tracey realised this wasn’t just a local business – it was a scalable one.
Franchising, Family Life & Finding Balance
After having her third child, Tracey faced a decision many parents know too well. Returning to work would mean childcare costs swallowing her salary. At the same time, her husband was made redundant.
Instead of panicking, they pivoted.
They built the business around family life – not the other way around.
Today:
- Tracey is the face of the business, handling marketing and visibility
- Her husband manages finance and logistics
- Ride On Time has franchisees across Oxfordshire, the Cotswolds, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and Lincolnshire
- The business continues to grow steadily and intentionally
But one part of the business started to stand out.
When One Idea Becomes an Entire Programme
While running sessions, Tracey noticed something powerful.
Children weren’t just playing – they were learning.
Through traffic lights, crossings and role-play, children were naturally developing road awareness. When she looked deeper, she realised something shocking:
There was no structured road safety education for early years children.
Most children don’t receive any formal road safety training until much later – despite it being a vital life skill.
As a parent herself, Tracey knew how stressful it could be trying to teach road safety without shouting instructions or creating fear.
So she listened.
She researched.
She built something better.
Safe Little Steps: From Idea to Funded Programme
Over time, Tracey developed her road safety workshops, refining them through real delivery in schools and nurseries. Eventually, the programme became so strong it secured local council funding.
That funding allowed her to expand the programme further, creating Safe Little Steps – a complete road safety initiative that includes:
- In-school workshops for children
- An online course for parents
- Practical, engaging strategies that make learning road safety fun
Because of the impact, the programme has now secured funding again – this time across a much larger area.
And that’s when Tracey started thinking bigger.
Turning Knowledge Into Something Scalable
Tracey joined my Race to Recurring Revenue challenge because she wanted to:
- Elevate the business
- Create additional revenue streams
- Offer franchisees more ways to generate income
- Build something that would future-proof the business
What she didn’t expect was the mindset shift.
During the challenge, she realised something huge:
She already had the expertise.
Years of research.
Real-world delivery.
Proven results.
She just needed the structure to turn that into an asset.
Not a Quick Win – A Long-Term Play
Tracey is refreshingly honest.
This wasn’t an overnight success story.
But what she did gain was:
- Confidence
- Clarity
- A repeatable system
She’s now applying the same process across:
- Road safety
- Parties
- Franchising
One idea didn’t just become one product – it became a framework she’ll use for years.
The Power of Being in the Right Room
For eight years, it had been just Tracey and her husband.
Being part of a wider community of children’s activity providers showed her she wasn’t alone – everyone has doubts, questions, and moments of “am I doing this right?”
That sense of support, accountability and shared experience made a huge difference.
